Community and culture celebrated at Rdale Spring Powwow
The beat of the drum echoed through Robbinsdale on May 10, as vibrant regalia, spirited dancing, and powerful songs brought the annual spring powwow to life—courtesy of the Rdale American Indian Education Program.
“This year’s powwow is a reflection of the dedication and heart our American Indian Parent Advisory Committee, staff and volunteers put into making it happen,” said Beth Tepper, Director of Achievement and Integration. “This celebration of culture and community would not have been possible without their efforts, wopida tanka (many thanks), and gichi-miigwech to all who contributed.”
Held at Robbinsdale Middle School, the event featured a shared community meal of frybread tacos provided by Powwow Grounds, over 30 vendors and indigenous artists, visiting royalty from Battle Point and Onamia, and four drum groups, including one student drumming group from another tribal nation.
The powwow’s Royalty Contest led to the selection of the new Miss Robbinsdale Indian Education, Loucia Villagomez of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and a ninth grader at Armstrong High School, and Jaxen Boshey-Stevens, of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe and a second grade student at Northport Elementary, will continue as Robbinsdale Junior Brave. Villagomez and Boshey-Stevens are excited to represent Rdale at powwows and events during the summer.
The powwow, held the same weekend as Mother’s Day, concluded with a Round Dance honoring mothers.
